About Serpentine Stone
These carvings were made from Serpentine which is usually a dark green but may have black, brown, white or even red patches and streaks. It is a lot harder than Soapstone (the common term applied to mineral Talc) which is usually very easily marked and was the stone seen in most shops.
The quality of materials and the level of finishing kept these stone carvings above all others. There is a real difference between grades of stone from Zimbabwe; we preferred our customers have the best !
AFRICAN STONE FIGURES
Serpentine Stone Flatheads
The majority of our stock consisted of family units as shown here. We had two, three, four and five head pieces. Occasionally they were available with the twist design base as shown in the three family piece.
Other popular designs were the plate lovers and the ring lovers.
We always smiled when we went to see our supplier at the NEC. He was a foreign gentleman and used to dress up in full Zulu war dress.
Quite a sight to behold !
