Although marbles have been made and played with for centuries, it was not until the Victorian era of the 19th century that glass marbles became popular.
From about 1840, changes in production techniques enabled glassmakers to produce hand made marbles at a price that children could afford. These beautiful items became ever more popular and as one glassmaker tried to make something more lovely and sought after than the next, so the variety of types and designs and the beauty of marbles increased.
The makers of these marbles still use the same age old glassmaker’s skills to make these attractive marbles. Each piece is hand made and totally unique.
Unfortunately, these skills do not come cheaply today and these marbles are beyond the reach of most children. However, they are avidly collected by the adult marble fanatic and by those who appreciate fine glasswork.
Pleanty of choice still available at The House of Marbles.
