Very common now but when hot pack hand warmers came out they were a fascinating product.

Just snap the metal disk and a chemical reaction changed the clear liquid to a semi-solid, milky substance. The heat produced lasted about an hour.

To reset them, they just needed to be dropped into boiling water for about five minutes.

We had clear and red in heart and circle shapes.

HOT PACK HAND WARMERS

How they work:

Inside the pouch is a supersaturated mix of sodium acetate and water.

This liquid state just needs one thing to set it off and when you click the metal disc inside you start the reaction.

Immediately, sodium acetate crystals start to form around the disc, precipitating outward.

As they do, they release all that pent-up energy in an exothermic reaction.

And there you go - heat.
