Original Astro Lamp

Way back in 1963, one Edward Craven-Walker was sitting in a pub when he saw an egg timer which used a slowly rising blob of liquid rather than falling sand. That was the birth of the astro-lamp which was the name given to the first lava lamp.

During the following years there were many new models produced:

Jet, Astro Baby, Astro, Telstar, Fluidium and the enormous Lunar.

And do you remember the short-lived Glitterball? Favourite colours were gold and silver but it was also available in blue and green for a while. Unfortunately, the “lava” tended to stick to the glass after a few weeks so the lamps were discontinued.

Latest collection available at Mathmos.

At the height of production, Astros, Baby, Jets and Telstars were available in the five colours shown. The Fluidium and Astro were also available with clear liquid and white wax. This version of the Astro was produced as the 3 in 1 and came with three different coloured bulbs giving variable lighting effects.
