Terramundi Money Pots

Terramundi Money Pots also known as “Etruscan Money Amphora” - have been traditionally used in Italy for over 2,000 years and their hand thrown design has remained unchanged. Early examples can be seen in the British Museum.

By tradition, once the first coin is dropped the money pot must be fed until full, upon which it must be smashed whilst making a wish. It is customary to replace the pot and to spend the money on good things. Broken pots are sometimes used to house plants and candles. Money pots are said to bring good fortune. There is a separate fortune card and date and desire card with each pot. Money pots hold, on average, about £200 in mixed silver.

Each pot is hand thrown in Italy and hand painted in London.

Once filled, we have found that the easiest way to gain entry (apart from using a hammer!) is to insert a large screwdriver or chisel into the slot and lever downwards. If you’re lucky, this will remove the top section leaving the base for your favourite plant - it’s not guaranteed to work though!
